In the Old Testament, the Israelites acknowledge their Creator God as totally Other, unequalled in majesty. Isaiah proclaims: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts” (Isa 6:3). Yet the Israelites rejoice that this God has made a covenant of love with them (Exod 20:4–6), even though they are sinners.
